| Cutting into the
wedding cake is one of the first few things a
newlywed couple does as husband and wife. Traditionally
in Malaysia, this is done at the wedding banquet.
Very much a photo opportunity for photographers,
the couple will be on stage, in front of hundreds
of guests, cutting into a multi-tiered ceremonial
'dummy' cake. In recent times however, more and
more couples have begun to appreciate the symbolism
of a real wedding cake. This has been increasingly
so in urban locales. |

| It has
been said that the wedding cake is a symbol of
an abundance of love and blessings. For those
intent on having a real cake, no expense (that
is, in terms of effort) is spared as it then becomes
an integral part of the wedding. No longer is
it just a prop for photography. Rather, it is
a meaningful act, partaking the first slice of
life together as they feed each other a morsel
of cake. |

| It is perhaps fair
to say that cost is often the primary factor in
deciding whether to have a wedding cake custom-made.
Many relegate the cake in terms of priority, which
is understandable considering the fact that there
are other mainstays such as gowns, suits, bridesmaids
dresses, flowers, food and beverage and the like.
However, couples who have managed to allocate
a small portion of their wedding budget for a
cake, often say that it is worth every penny,
so to speak. More personal in nature, favourite
fillings, colour themes, fanciful embellishments,
much-loved frosting, all these can be incorporated
into the cake design, and can ultimately be shared
with your loved ones and guests. Apart from being
a conversation piece, it is also a novelty for
guests to be served wedding cake, definitely an
ante up in sophistication when compared to a mass-produced,
cling-wrapped piece of fruitcake, which is usually
the case at local weddings. |

| If cost is a major
consideration, fret not, as there are many ways
to keep it in check. Firstly, select a cake designer
that meets your budget range. There are specialty-cake
designers who may charge a well-deserved premium
for their professional, creative services and
distinctive designs, cake shops or bakeries that
do wedding cakes as an additional service, or
why not enlist the help of a talented amateur,
a close relative or family friend perhaps. As
always, do some research beforehand. Cut out photographs
from magazines, download pictures from the internet,
in short, provide your cake designer with a complete
brief on your desires and expectations. The number
of guests expected at your wedding is also paramount
as it will be necessary to determine size requirements. |

Whilst some still stick to
the tradition of fruitcake, contemporary couples
have embraced flavours such as variations of
chocolate, vanilla, tiramisu, orange and a gamut
of others. Frosting options such as buttercream,
fondant, marzipan and royal icing as well as
a host of embellishment possibilities are all
perks of customisation, and these are the details
that need to be discussed with the cake designer.
For example, using fresh flowers to embellish
the cake would be less costly than reproducing
a lace design from the wedding gown in icing.
And if the former were the case, ensuring that
the flowers blend in with those of the bridal
bouquet and table centrepieces would be a good
idea. Suffice to say that like the many other
components of a wedding, the cake also deserves
much attention. It may take some effort but
it's all part and parcel of the experience of
planning a wedding.
