For weddings in a non-religious setting, there are a host of venues available for smaller intimate celebrations through to celebratory productions of a mammoth scale.

Whatever your requirements may be, a little research and tips from wedded friends will reveal many a wonderful location for that very special ceremony.

When selecting a venue, accessibility is of course a very important criterion. Traffic is of concern in many Asian cities, and a centrally located, easily accessible location would certainly be a good choice.

Those with a more adventurous spirit may opt for a seaside wedding or perhaps one in a hill resort. Travel by car, rail or air and a host of other logistics have to be coordinated and could be a massive task to pull off. When planned and executed well however, the experience would be a memorable one for the bride and groom as well as guests alike.

Sitting capacity is also one factor to consider. A cosy restaurant may be the perfect choice for an intimate gathering of family, relatives and close friends. An emerging trend particularly in more urban locales, the aim is to share this special day with those closest to you.

The norm however is for larger banquets to be held in hotels. Again, choices are aplenty. An assortment of packages is available, evidence of stiff competition among hotels in courting soon-to-be newlyweds. Take your time to compare quotes and most importantly, visit the hotels and meet their sales personnel. This will give you an idea of the possibilities in terms of sitting capacity and décor, and also the level of service each hotel accords.

For some, a celebration is never complete without alcoholic beverages. Most hotels and restaurants nowadays waive corkage charges should the bride and groom decide to supply their own hard liquor or wine. The number of bottles with corkage waived should be discussed and agreed upon right from the onset of negotiations. Beer however, is still very often subject to corkage.

Some hotels also include party favours in their menu prices. These could be the traditional piece of fruitcake or chocolate praline packed in a fancy paper box. The more forward-thinking establishments meanwhile have come up with trendy favours such as votive candles, chopsticks, potpourri sachets and the like.

Tip : Remember to find out what coloured table cloths, napkins, bows and drapes are available at the chosen venue, especially if you have a colour theme incorporated into your wedding.
