| The
internet and the resulting advent of e-cards have
contributed to the decline in the tradition of
sending greeting cards during special occasions,
particularly in more urban locales. Instead of
the pleasant euphoria of prying open an envelope
and the anticipation of seeing the card within,
what is more common nowadays is the conveying
of greetings and best wishes online. Whilst this
may be true for occasions such as birthdays for
instance, it is unlikely that e-cards will ever
replace the customary tradition of wedding invitations,
sent either through the post or by hand, ensuring
that everyone on the prepared guest list is made
aware of the upcoming celebrations. |

| One
trend that is emerging however, is the desire
to have unique invitation cards. Rather than making
a choice from a catalogue of pre-printed designs,
we are beginning to find more and more urban,
lifestyle-conscious, city-slickers opting for
a specially designed invite. Creative expression
and exclusivity are what such couples will be
looking for. In their search for the ideal card
that will reflect their personalities, create
a buzz among its recipients and set the tone of
their wedding from the onset, many now turn to
graphic designers who offer personalised service
with an independent streak when it comes to design.
Unlike a large greeting card or printing company,
invites are not the core business for many of
these graphic designers. Rather, they are more
than likely to be practitioners in mainstream
advertising, but take on the job of fashioning
one-of-a-kind invitations as a passionate hobby.
The financial returns from this sideline may not
be as rewarding. It is the creative pursuit that
is. |

| Those
who place their trust in such independent designers
are often pleasantly surprised with the ideas
presented to them. Like any advertising campaign,
a good brief is what is necessary for the designer
to translate a client's vision into something
concrete, in this instance, sample invitations
for the client's perusal and feedback, before
the final amendments and selection are made. Many
such designers will tell you that they work best
when left to their own devices, and one would
be wise to adhere to this request. You are after
all paying for their creative expertise. The decision
to work with a graphic designer may result in
a slightly bigger dent in your budget, but more
often than not the results are totally worth it.

| Tip
: Never throw away invitation cards that you receive
as they may become a source of inspiration when
the time comes for you to design your own invite.
