Double Happiness Celebration

Symbolisms, tradition and cultural practices are prevalent in Chinese weddings. One such symbol that comes to mind is the ‘double happiness’. On its own, the character ‘Xi’ stands for ‘joy’.  When these two characters are side by side, it creates another word ‘Shuang Xi’ which means ‘double happiness’.  Over the centuries, this double symbol has been much used at weddings to denote happiness and longevity.  Some liken the two characters to resemble a bride and groom, holding hands and united in their new journey as a happily married couple. As two people come together, so too their families united in this new relationship.

At Chinese weddings, the ‘double happiness’ symbol is often seen in invitation cards, ballroom backdrops and as a decorative item in the wedding chamber. In recent times however, the symbol has been innovatively used in other wedding-related paraphernalia as well. These include tea sets for the traditional tea ceremony where both the bride and groom convey their respect to their elders, wedding favours such as key chains as well as wine jacket bottles, even dining sets, mug sets and bowls that make perfect gifts for newlyweds. Mini-tees with the ‘double happiness’ symbol inscribed on the front also make charming attire for the bride and groom’s entourage, adding an even more festive touch to the celebrations.

The creative interpretation of the ‘double happiness’ symbol will definitely be a catalyst towards modern couples embracing this cultural tradition in times to come.
