Beautiful drapes form part of the canopy

Attention to detail is evident in the table settings; even the fairy lights on the trees in the background complement the colour theme

Despite the unpredictable weather, the trend towards outdoor weddings is fast catching on.  Although the heat and humidity can be stifling at times, those intending to steer away from the norm of hotel ballrooms and restaurants take the calculated risk of holding their wedding reception outdoors. And the resulting event can be 'captivating and mesmerising' if the weather holds up.

First and foremost, secure a suitable location. Poolside in a hotel, the grounds of a bungalow-type restaurant, or perhaps one of our many parks and gardens, are possibilities. The size of the guest list and the corresponding capacity of possible venues will assist couples in narrowing down choices. Whatever location one chooses, it is advisable to erect a canopy as shelter. They now come with beautiful drapes, soft lighting and even fans. The greenery and landscaping of the outdoors provide a perfect backdrop for ivory canopies and drapes. Fresh flowers and potted plants further enhance the ambience of dining out in the open, whereas flickering candles in their many forms such as tea-lights, votives, pillars, even floating ones, make the setting a romantic one. To create a 'magical' atmosphere, swathe the trees surrounding the canopies in fairy lights.

If a casual party is preferred, buffet lines can be set up. However, this is ideal only if you have a comfortable crowd. You certainly do not want your wedding guests to queue up for hours! Alternatively, a more formal sit-down affair is also an option. This will largely depend on the preference of the bride and groom. As for entertainment, a 'live' band will fit perfectly into the scenario. And surely, having the first dance under a moonlit sky would be an experience to be remembered.

Tip : In our tropical weather, do make arrangements for 'cooling' equipment such as mist fans
