I
started designing wedding cakes one and a half
years ago.
What
made you decide on wedding cakes?
I commenced
by baking cakes for birthdays, festive seasons,
corporate celebrations and relatives. I have always
wanted to venture into wedding cakes as the wedding
cake is a very important centrepiece for such
a milestone in the couple's lives.
What
designs do you specialise in?
I wouldn't
say that I have a particular specialty. The most
important thing is how to cater to the design
requirements of the couple. Perhaps, my unique
selling point is that I pay attention to 'personal
catering'.
What
is the most interesting design you've done?
An
entire cake designed based on luggage, naturally
for a pilot client of mine.
What
is the trend in wedding cakes?
Contemporary. Most couples who approach me
prefer plain fondant designs with royal icing
embroidery or gum paste flowers.
Are
couples willing to pay for a real cake as opposed
to a dummy cake provided by hotels and restaurants?
In
my experience, most couples who come to me are
prepared to spend as this is a once in a lifetime
event. There are some who do not proceed after
a few meetings as their expectations do not commensurate
with their budget. Premium quality cakes come
tagged with a price. Nevertheless, I do cater
to couples according to their budget whenever
possible.
Why
should couples invest in a real cake?
Every
couple should purchase a custom-made wedding cake
as it leaves a very lasting impression not only
for the couple but their guests as well. The cake
cutting is always an exciting moment and having
dummy cakes which have been used repeatedly by
countless couples will not make your wedding any
different.
