An emerging trend that has been gaining popularity in the past few years is for brides to have their wedding gown custom-made. Whilst the majority is still very much into selecting a gown off-the-rack as part of a bridal studio package complete with hairstyling, makeup, flowers and photography, many a bride have taken the alternate route of visiting designers and specialty boutiques to have their wedding gown made-to-measure according to their whim and fancy.

Brides who opt for made-to-measure often do so because of a number of reasons:

  • The opportunity to provide input and share ideas with the designer to come up with the design of your choice.

  • The possibility of selecting the type of fabric to be used, for example, bridal satin, duchesse satin, Thai silk, chiffon or organza to name a few.

  • The chance to so call 'pick the brain' of the designer in terms of silhouette of the gown and embellishments such as embroidery, lace appliqué or beading for instance.

  • A certain degree of exclusivity as most made-to-measure gowns are 'one-off' designs and unique.

  • The fit of a custom-made gown is often superior to one bought off-the-rack.

Naturally, the personal attention accorded to the bride by the designer, together with the exclusivity that is assured, are reflected in a slight premium in terms of cost, when compared to a ready-made wedding gown. The end results however, will very often justify the additional cost incurred.

Tip : Placing your trust in the designer is very much required when ordering a custom-made gown as you only get to see the outcome when you go for your first fitting.
