The perfect wedding gown is the desire of every bride

Some couples actually find selecting the bridal gown to be the most stressful and time consuming part of the planning process as it entails endless weeks, sometimes even months of shopping not only for the gown but for the designer as well. Whilst some brides prefer the company of their girlfriends, there are others who value the input of their soon-to-be husbands. Then there are those who take it to another level by seeking the opinion of their mother, future mother-in-law, sisters, cousins, aunts, 8th uncle or Mrs Ng who lives down the road. The intentions may be good, but to avoid being frazzled by everyone's varying input, it is best not to seek too many opinions. To successfully find the wedding gown of her dreams, a bride should adhere to some of the following guidelines.

Type of wedding : The design of your gown should reflect whether it is a garden party, beachside celebration, banquet in a hotel ballroom or perhaps a themed wedding. For ceremonies held in a place of worship such as a mosque, church or temple, it is advisable and a mark of respect to inquire if there are any restrictions as to the type of gowns that can be worn. It may also be necessary to incorporate a traditional wedding garment into the wedding trousseau in honour of your cultural heritage.

Surf the internet or flip through magazines : The internet and magazines are good sources for picking out patterns. When attempting to pick a design from a magazine, take into consideration your stature and figure, and above all, whether you can carry off the look.  Run through your shortlist of designs with your designer and he or she will be able to guide you and perhaps even modify the design accordingly in order to flatter your figure.

Budget : Set aside a realistic budget for your wedding trousseau and work strictly based on this.  Take into consideration that you will have to pay a lot more for a full-laced gown for example than a plain gown with little embellishment.  Prices also vary from one designer to another. Unless you are willing to spend and keep the gown of your dreams for sentimental reasons, then the other option would be to rent from bridal houses.  They carry a wide variety of designs and adjustments can be made to suit each and every bride. Nowadays, some designers offer the option of a "buy back service" where the gown is made to the bride's required design and measurements. It is rented to the bride for the big day and subsequently returned.

Designer : Always settle for someone you feel most comfortable with as you will be seeing a lot of the designer from the moment the order is placed to the ultimate delivery.  A designer knows best how to create a stunning gown, so leave it in the hands of the professional. Good designers will do their best or else their reputation will be at stake!!

Time :  Time is certainly of essence.   If you are thinking of walking down the isle in a made-to-measure gown, do allocate at least 3 - 4 months in advance for the gown to be made, particularly if you are getting married during the 'peak wedding season'. The result of a rushed job is never satisfactory and moreover, some boutiques will charge a premium for an order placed at the eleventh hour!

Tip : It is HIS wedding as well! Do not overshadow the groom by for example, wearing a huge billowing skirt that will dwarf him should you already be taller than your other half.
